Emergency Medical Response & Lifeguarding
An advanced course presenting college-level material, designed for youth and leaders who are active in their community, athletics, or scouting, or who have an interest in pursuing a career in medicine.
Classes run Sundays, 8am–5pm, during the first three months of the year. Lunch is taken as a group — students should plan to bring $15 each class day.
Included Certifications
Emergency Medical Response
Comprehensive pre-hospital emergency care covering patient assessment, trauma care, and stabilization.
American Red Cross Lifeguarding
Water rescue readiness and aquatic emergency response, including prerequisites swim-tread-swim sequence.
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
Advanced CPR techniques used in professional and clinical emergency response environments.
Emergency Oxygen Administration
Safe use and administration of supplemental oxygen in emergency situations.
Bloodborne Pathogens
Training in exposure prevention, response procedures, and safety protocols.
Epinephrine Auto-Injector Administration
Recognition and treatment of severe allergic reactions using epinephrine auto-injectors.
Merit Badge Opportunities
Registered Scouts who complete this course will have the opportunity to earn the following merit badges:
First Aid
Fulfills the updated First Aid merit badge requirements.
Swimming
Aquatic skills developed through the lifeguarding curriculum satisfy Swimming merit badge requirements.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency response training and scenario work aligns with Emergency Preparedness merit badge requirements.
Lifesaving
Lifeguarding certification work satisfies the requirements for the Lifesaving merit badge.
Certification Requirements
Candidates must meet the following requirements to be eligible for certification. A candidate may fail one certification and remain eligible for the remainder.
Emergency Medical Response
Attend all class sessions, demonstrate competency in required skills, and pass all exams with a score of at least 80%.
Lifeguarding
Complete swim prerequisites, attend all class sessions, demonstrate required skills, pass all exams with at least 80%, and be at least 15 years of age by April 30th of the course year.
Course Fees
This course is taught at cost to keep training accessible to youth. The total course fee is $200 per student, paid in two equal installments during the course.
Partial and full scholarships are available. No student should be unable to participate due to financial constraints — please reach out when registering.
